To cut a cigar properly, you should remove just the cap at the closed end of the cigar.
The cap is the small, rounded piece of tobacco that holds the wrapper together.
Using a cigar cutter, carefully cut just above the shoulder of the cigar. This allows for a smooth draw while keeping the cigar intact.
There are a few common types of cutters:
- Guillotine cutter (straight cut)
- V-cutter
- Punch cutter
A straight cut is the most common and recommended for beginners.
Avoid cutting too much of the cigar, as this can cause the wrapper to unravel.
If you do not cut enough, the draw may feel tight.
The best cigar cutter depends on your personal preference and the type of cigar you are smoking.
Guillotine cutters provide a straight, clean cut and are the most popular choice.
V-cutters create a wedge-shaped cut, which can concentrate the draw and flavour.
Punch cutters create a small hole in the cap and are ideal for smaller ring gauge cigars.
If you are new to cigars, we recommend starting with a guillotine cutter.
